PURPOSE:To prevent a starting device from being damaged by shocks by providing a drive shaft driven by a screw spline with a special function and an air chamber with the function of a shock-absorber at the top of the drive shaft. CONSTITUTION:An air motor 6 is started, and a pinion 8 is pushed out to be engaged with a ring gear for starting an internal-combustion engine. A screw spline 29 on the inner circumference of a cylindrical body 24 is engaged with a screw spline cut on a drive shaft 30, and functions to advance the shaft when the rotation of a driven shaft is stopped. A stopper 31 and the rear end face of the drive shaft 30 work as a piston, while an air chamber 68 functions as a shock-absorber. This construction permits to receive the inertial force of the drive shaft by the air chamber 68 and avoid the shock damages.
