Synthetic hydrotalcite, a natural mineral of the chemical formula Al2O3.6MgO.CO2.12H2O (=Al2Mg6(OH)12CO3.4H2O> can be prepared synthetically in an easily filterable form by adding an aluminium sulphate solution or aluminium chloride solution to an aqueous sodium carbonate/magnesium oxide suspension at elevated temperatures. The hydrotalcite thus obtained can be used therapeutically: it has antacid activity with prolonged buffer action. A product with optimum properties is obtained if the molar ratio of the reactants is approximately 0.1 of aluminium salt, 0.3 of magnesium oxide, 0.425 of sodium carbonate. |
