PURPOSE:To take out effectively light emerging from an infrared-ray transmitting optical fiber having a chalcogenide glass core as convergeable light by providing the shape of a convex lens to the light emergent end of the fiber. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber having a chalcogenide glass core is manufactured by a conventional method, and one end of the fiber is cut perpendicularly. The measured transmission loss (alpha) of this fiber is 0.3dB/m (lambda=10.6mum). When the perpendicular end is shaped as shown by the figure after melting by electric discharge in inert gaseous Ar, the loss (alpha) is reduced to 0.2dB/m. When the length of the perpendicularly cut optical fiber is increased from 5m to 10m, the measured loss is reduced. As a result, it is found that the reduction of the loss after the shaping is based on the reflection loss at the emergent end. |
