PURPOSE:To produce a polymer containing ether linkages in the main chain, excellent in heat resistance and solvent resistance, by reacting an aromatic dihydric phenol with a xylylene dihalide and methylene chloride in the presence of a solvent and an alkali. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic dihydric phenol of formula I (wherein R is a 1-5C alkylene, -S-, or -SO2-) is reacted with a xylylene dihalide of formula II (wherein X is a halogen) and methylene chloride in a solvent (e.g., N-methylpyrrolidone) in the presence of an alkali (e.g., NaOH) at 20-150 deg.C for 30min-8hr to obtain a polymer having a recurring unit consisting of a block composed of one or a plurality of connected units of formula III and one or a plurality of connected units of formula IV, wherein a relationship of k/(k+l)=0.01-0.99 is satisfied, where k is the number of units of formula III, and l is the number of units of formula IV, and having terminal groups which are H's or X's and a m.p. >=200 deg.C and a heat decomposition initiation temperature of about 350 deg.C.
