A tunnel tube formed from a plurality of tunnel sections (1a, 1b, etc.) is advanced in cycles from a driving trench in a trough (9) at the bottom (10) of the body of water on a sand bed (21) towards a target trench. The front tunnel end protrudes freely during the advance. While the front tunnel end is being supported relative to the trough bottom (10) by means of lifting devices (14, 15), the sand bed (21) is produced by a water-sand mixture being jetted section by section into the hollow space between tunnel bottom (16) and trough bottom (10) by means of a pipeline (18, 19).
