A method is proposed here for reducing the data rate required in the case of digital sound signals which are transmitted organised into blocks and characterised in terms of blocks by a scale factor. With the given transmission capacity of the channel, this produces the possibility of transmitting additional data; these can be used, for example, to increase the transmissible amplitude resolution of the signal or to transmit information additional to the sound signal.
