In such an apparatus, the test container should be situated outside the liquid to be tested but nevertheless make it possible to determine the saturation temperature directly. For this purpose, provision is made for the test container to be a pressurised container (1) which is linked by an effective-pressure line (2) to the liquid under test. Situated in the vicinity of the base (13) of the pressurised container is a heating element (3) and in the vicinity of the top (7) of the pressurised container a temperature sensor (8). The temperature measured by the temperature sensor (8) in a vapour space (6) is also the saturation temperature of the liquid under test. To check the water level in the pressurised container (1), the casing (9) of the latter has a steam/water detector (10) passing through it. The output of the heating element (3) can be controlled by the steam/water detector. The apparatus is preferably used as a saturation temperature detector for the primary coolant of a pressurised water reactor plant. <IMAGE>
