A carriage (38), having a driver (48) pivotable about a transverse axis (A) and a drag lever (56) arranged next to said driver, can be driven in the longitudinal direction of a filter press; the drag lever (56) is pivotable about a transverse axis (B), counter to the resistance of a spring (60), independently of the driver (48). Catch levers (68) are mounted on the filter plates (20) of the filter press and each have a driving face (78) assigned to the driver (48) and a drag face (82) assigned to the drag lever (56). The driver (48) and drag lever (56) catch respectively behind the driving face (78) and drag face (82) on the catch lever (68) of the foremost filter plate (20) not yet displaced. Shortly before the end of the predetermined displacement travel of this filter plate (20), the driver (48) runs onto a deflection face (80), so that it comes loose from the driving face (78); however, the drag lever (56) still remains in engagement with the drag face (82), until the filter plate (20) butts against a previously displaced filter plate, thereby generating on the drag lever (56) a torque which releases it from the drag face (82). <IMAGE>
