In a chain conveyor having a conveyor track comprising a number of sections, the length of which is adapted to match the length of the conveyed items such as pallets or storage containers 2, and which at each side of the conveyor track comprises an endless conveying chain 8, which is driven by a hauling station common to the entire conveyor track, each section of the conveyor track is provided with an activation system for pressing the conveying chain 8 against the underside of a conveyed item 2 placed on the section in question, the conveyor comprising control elements for co-ordinated control of the activation system at adjoining sections of the conveyor track. The conveying chains consist of roller chains 8, which are carried at either side of the conveying track in a horizontal box girder 4 having an upper, central slot 6, through which the roller chains 8 can be pressed against the underside of the conveyed item by means of a rail 10, which is designed to be raised by means of an inflatable hose body 12 fitted in the base of the box girder 4. This provides a simple means of minimizing the necessary power consumption, since the chain conveyor drive station need only be designed for conveying a single conveyed item at a time. <IMAGE>
