Improvements in self-energising disc brakes.

A self-energising disc brake of the spreading type is disclosed. In the disc brake rotatable friction discs (2) provided on opposite sides with linings (5) are adapted to be brought into engagement with radial braking surfaces in a housing by an actuator assembly (6). The actuator assembly (6) comprises pressure plates (7, 8) located between the discs (2) and centered by pilot lugs (9), and balls (11) located in oppositely inclined recesses (10) inthe adjacent faces of the pressure plates (7, 8). At least the linings (5) which engage with the pressure plates (7, 8) are separated into annular rings (20, 21) by an annular groove (22), and the groove (22) is substantially coincident with a pitch circle of constant diameter upon which the recesses (10) lie in an angularly spaced relationship. The groove (22) increases the degree of cooling in the regions of the recesses (10), thereby reducing the likelihood of hot spotting occurring in such regions.
