The probe for use particularly in turning centers includes a stylus (56) and cylindrical shank portion (72) that allows the probe to be mounted in the machine turret in the same manner as the tools. The shank is hollow to provide a compartment for batteries (80,82) supplying power to infrared transmission circuitry (100) for wirelessly transmitting information about the inspected workpiece from L.E.D's (52) on the forward sloping portion (110) of the probe back to the machine control. The probe may also include means to activate the circuitry (100) prior to contacting a workpiece in response to an optical signal received by a detector (48), or in response to the stylus (56) touching a reference surface, so that battery power is conserved. <IMAGE>
