PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer without causing the precipitation of the Ti component of the polymerization catalyst, by using a catalyst composed of an organic Al compound and a solution obtained by treating a reaction product of a specific Al compound and an Si compound successively with a Grignard reagent, a hydroxyl compound and a Ti compound. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene or a mixture of ethylene and >=3C alpha-olefin is polymmerized under a pressure of >=200kg/cm<2> at >=125 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst composed of (A) a Ti-containing solution prepared by (1) reacting an organic Al compound of formula I (R<1> is 1-8C alkyl; X<1> is halogen; l is 0-3) with an Si compound of formula II (R<2> and R<3> are 1-8C alkyl or phenyl; m is 0-4), and (2) treating the reaction product successively with a Grignard compound of formula R<4>MgX<2> (R<4> is 1-8C alkyl or phenyl; X<2> is halogen), a hydroxyl compound of formula R<5>OH (R<5> is 4-20C alkyl or phenyl) and a Ti compound of formula III (R<6> is 1-20C alkyl or phenyl; X<3> is halogen).
