PURPOSE:To prevent build-up of hearth rolls by providing a means for measuring the tension of a hearth roll and the hearth roll of the succeeding stage, determining the difference in tension between an inlet side and an outlet side, comparing the same with a set value and controlling the tension or speed. CONSTITUTION:Tension measuring devices 4 are provided to a hearth roll 2-1 and the succeeding hearth roll 2-2 in the soaking zone of a continuous annealing furnace 3 and the tension of each roll is measured. The signal is inputted to a tension calculator 5 by which the difference in tension between the inlet side and the outlet side is calculated. The difference in tension is put into a controller 6 which compares the difference with a set difference 8 in tension and inputs a control signal to a tension control device 7 so as to eliminate the deviation. The revolutions of bridle rolls 9-1, 9-2 on the inlet and outlet sides of the furnace are controlled by said device. The difference between the set tension on the inlet side of the furnace and actual tension 11 is compared and the motor 13 of the roll 9-1 is controlled by a speed controller 12. The formation of the surface flaw on a strip is eliminated by such mechanism.
