PURPOSE: An exposure control apparatus and the method for an image processing system are provided to automatically adjust the exposure time, by corresponding to luminous intensity from the bright intensity of radiation to the dark intensity of radiation. CONSTITUTION: An image processing system including an image input section, an image processing section, a memory controller comprises: a signal integrator for finding size information of an image signal; a micom for controlling an exposure compensating operation of a system, according to the found size information; an iris adjuster for adjusting opening degrees of the iris; a gain adjuster for adjusting a gain of the image processing section; and a scanning speed adjuster for deciding a low speed scanning of a CCD(Charge Coupled Device). A method for controlling exposure of the image processing system comprises the steps of: finding the size information of the inputted image signal; adjusting the intensity of radiation by adjusting the opening degrees of the iris, when the image signal from the first step is under a standard value; finding the size information of the image signal, when the iris is maximum opened; adjusting the gain of the image processing section, when the found image signal from the third step is under the standard value; finding the size information when the gain is maximum; and deciding the low speed scanning of the CCD from the image processing section, when the found image signal from the fifth step is under the standard value.
