PURPOSE: A safety device in an escalator is provided to previously prevent an accident such as an accident that a finger is jammed in an inlet of a handrail. CONSTITUTION: A safety device of an escalator is composed of a handrail inlet cover(8) having elasticity for sensing the generation of a jammed finger when a foreign matter such as a finger is flowed in, installed on the inlet side of the handrail, a foreign matter inflow detecting unit(11) connected to the inlet cover, keeping a regular interval and a detecting switch(9) for stopping the operation of a step and the handrail by sensing the movement of the detecting unit, placed on the rear face of the inlet cover. Herein, the operation of the escalator is stopped since the detecting switch is operated if the detecting unit presses the detecting switch while moving backward when the foreign matter is flowed in between the handrail and the detecting unit of the inlet cover.
