A profiled sail for a surfboard has a mast (1), a wishbone (7) and a sail (2) with a mast pocket (3). In the neutral state of the profiled sail, that is when there is no wind pressure, the mast pocket (3) pushed over the mast (1) is arranged loosely around the mast (1). Here, the mast pocket (3) merges into the sail area (2) at a distance from the mast (1) along the transition line (6). Several batten pockets (4) are arranged horizontally in the sail (2). In an extension of the batten pockets (4), reinforcing loops (9) which project into the mast pocket (3) are fastened to the transition line (6). Accommodated therein are sail battens (5) which project with their front edge into the mast pocket (3) up to about the mast. Inside the mast pocket (3), reinforcing inserts (8) are arranged in the area of the sail battens (5). The reinforcing inserts (8) keep the mast pocket open to the outside and give it a tear-shaped profile. During the action of wind, the sail is arched outwards and the mast pocket (3) with the reinforcing inserts (8) arranged therein is pulled forwards and laterally on the mast (1). In accordance with the acting wind pressure, the cross-section of the mast pocket is compressed to a narrower extent against the spring force of the reinforcing inserts (8). As a result, the sail battens (5) bear flush on the lee side inside the mast pocket (3). The advantage of the arrangement is that the sail has a fluidically advantageous profile, the lee side having a uniformly curved shape. <IMAGE>
