PURPOSE:To improve the azimuth resolution in a direction (short side direction) at a right angle to the direction of arrangement of a vibrator by arranging plural vibrators having a specific irradiating face in a lateral direction so as to form an array. CONSTITUTION:Each vibrator 7 has a shape where a thin and long flat plate of paper-tablet form is bent in a circular-arcuate form within a plane at a right angle in the arranging direction of the vibrators 7 and folded at the middle part. That is, each vibrator is formed into a shape where two circular arcs are drawn and intersected in an identical radius R on a plane at a right angle in the arranging direction of the vibrators 7 around two points P1, P2 located in a direction opposite to the irradiating direction of a beam A. Through the forming above, the characteristic of the ultrasonic wave beam A from each vibrator 7 is converged thinly in the short side direction of the array. Further, nondirectivity is attained in the long side direction. Thus the azimuth resolution of the array in the short side direction is improved while utilizing effectively the electron converging method and the sector scanning method.
