The pair of compasses includes a long screw (VSF) retained in a cylindrical component at one end ()C), to which the two arms of the compasses (JC) are attached by a pivoting joint. The other, upper end of the long screw is attached to the operating button (BC) by which the compass setting may be altered. - The two arms are also attached by short linkages (RC) to a coupling piece which is attached to the vertical support of the mechanism. As the operating button, and hence the screw are rotated, the pivoting joint linking the two arms is moved along the screw, thus changing the angle between thearms and their separation.
