In order to enable the patient to open a cutaneous stoma at desired time intervals, the stoma is closed by a valve element 40 in a valve body 30 for securing to the outside of the patient's body (63), and there is an internal, flat, annular support element 50 arranged to be positioned within the patient's body with a portion of the gastroenteric duct 61 passing through the support element 50, the support element 50 also being arranged to be sutured to the outer face of the muscular layers 62 of the patient's body.
