PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a stabilized monostable mode to obtain sufficient analog gradation and contrast. SOLUTION: A pair of substrates provided with aniaxial orientation treatment are disposed in orientation treatment direction-nearly parallel face-to-face relationship, and between the substrates a ferroelectric liquid crystal material having a chiral smectic C phase is packed. The projected component to the substrates in the axial direction of a cone depicted by the liquid crystal molecules of the ferroelectic liquid crystal materials and the projected component to the substrates in the molecular axial direction of the liquid crystal molecules as such are nearly in accordance with the orientation treatment direction, respectively, and this state is rendered monostable as the initial state. The ferroelectric liquid crystal material is a liquid crystal composition containing a compound in which an alkyl chain having a sum of carbon atoms of 17 has been bonded to both terminals of a phenylpyrimidine skeleton. |
