An isolated polynucleotide that hybridizes to the avian W chromosome. The presence of this polynucleotide in a biological sample can be used to determine the sex of a bird, preferably a bird selected from the species, Psittacines, Passerines, Penguins, Pigeons, Cranes rails and allies, chickens and kookaburras.
