PURPOSE:To perform desired reproduction without making any complicated operation by automatically changing the running speed of a rotary head and a video tape correspondingly to each running speed, at the time of reproduction, when a video signal is recorded on the same video tape under different running speed modes. CONSTITUTION:A video tape recorder is equipped with the 1st and 2nd rotary heads H1 and H2 for high speed mode and the 3rd and 4th rotary heads H3 and H4 for low speed mode. The 1st head change-over switch SW1 is provided with a discrete contact C1 connected to the 3rd rotary head H3, another discrete contact C2 connected to the 1st rotary head H1, and traveling contact C3 connected to the input section of a head output amplifier A. The 2nd head change-over switch SW2 is provided with a discrete contact C4 connected with the 4th rotary head H4, another discrete contact C5 connected with the 2nd rotary head H2, and traveling contact C6. Each traveling contact C3 and C6 of both head change-over switches SW1 and SW2 moves between corresponding discrete contacts C1 and C2 and C4 and C5 in response to a control signal to make switching operate.
