PURPOSE:To reduce the size and cost of the titled device and to expand its generality by exposing a part of the core of an optical fiber and forming a piezoelectric element directly on the periphery of the exposed core to allow the exposed core to expand/contract coincidently with the piezoelectric element and modulate the phase. CONSTITUTION:A part of the coat 22 of the optical fiber 2 is removed, an inside electrode 32 is filmed so as to surround the exposed core 21, a piezoelectric body 31 is filmed around the electrode 32, and then an outside electrode 33 is filmed around the piezoelectric body 31. When voltage is applied to both electrodes 32, 33, the piezoelectric element 3 is expanded in the longitudinal direction and the unitedly surrounded core 21 is also expanded, so that the length of the optical path is changed, the refractive index is also changed by the distortion and the phase of light transmitted through the inside is modulated. |
