PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grit chamber which can reduce the burden of grit washing work and a grit washing method for the grit chamber. SOLUTION: This grit chamber 36 has a grit pit 50 existing between a receiving section 32 into which raw water is admitted and a receiving tank 40 which is disposed downstream of the receiving section 32. The grit chamber settles the extraneous materials, such as earth and sand, included in the raw water to the bottom 50b of the grit pit 50. The grit chamber described above has a washing liquid supply pipe 57 for supplying a washing liquid to the grit pit 50, a gas supply pipe 64 for supplying a washing gas near to the bottom 50b of the grit pit 50, a liquid discharge pipe 54 for allowing the liquid in the grit pit 50 to flow out to the receiving tank 40 and a discharge pipe stop valve 56 capable of opening and closing the flow passage in the liquid discharge pipe 54.
