PURPOSE:To unify the device type information for a magnetic disk subsystem by making use of an unused byte of the information to a sense instruction to report the device type information to a host device. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic disk controller 2 receives an instruction from a channel 1 of a host device and decodes it to decide whether it is a sense instruction or not. If no sense instruction is decided, the instructions other than the sense instruction are processd to complete the operation. In the case of a sense information, an error is reported to check whether the sense is held or not. If the sense is held, the error information is sent to the channel 1 as a sense byte to complete the operation. In no sense is held, a basic sense byte is produced and a bit showing the detailed information on a device is formed at an unused byte. Then the sense byte is sent to the channel 1 to complete the operation.
