PURPOSE:To produce a polymer of a desired MW, with good separability on standind between an organic phase and water phase after the polycondensation reaction and during washing, by employing a specified MW modifier in the production of an aromatic polyester by interfacial polycondensation. CONSTITUTION:Use is made of a MW modifier comprising a compound of formula I , e.g., p-t-butylphenol or a compound of formula II, e.g., benzoyl chloride. In formulas I and II, R<9>-R<17> are each H, alkyl, phenyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aldoxy, or halogen, and X is halogen. Namely, an interfacial polycondensation reaction is effected by contacting an aqueous alkaline solution containing a bisphenol, e.g., 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, and phenolphthalein at a molar ratio of 10:9-97:3 with an organic solvent solution of (iso)phthaloyl dichloride in the presence of about 0.1-20wt%, based on the total amount of monomers, above MW modifier.
