PURPOSE:To transfer correctly a read sector value and shorten the time of a series of processings by improving a series of processings for a read sector instruction chained to a format write instruction in the magnetic disc controller which connects plural compatible mode devices to control them. CONSTITUTION:In this invention, the read sector instruction which transmits contents after the completion of the processing of the format write instruction to an upper device is executed before a magnetic disc device is disconnected from the magnetic disc controller and starts an independent erasing operation. That is, a magnetic disc controller 2 executes preliminarily the interrupt signal reset processing, which is required when an interrupt signal is transmitted from a magnetic disc device 4 and is inputted to the magnetic disc controller 2, following the indication of the independent erasing operation to the magnetic disc device 4. Next, a TR counter is read, and an obtained value is transferred as a read sector value to a channel 1 to terminate processings of the read sector instruction. Then, the magnetic disc controller and the magnetic disc device 4 are disconnected from each other, and the magnetic disc device 4 performs the erasing operation independently.
