A burner body 19 comprising a head 18 can assume and leave the position of insertion into an insertion bore 15 made in the wall 10 of the furnace, and a closure bar 21 can for its part assume and leave the position of insertion into the bore to close the latter. A means of displacement 23 is provided to place the head or the closure bar alternately in the axis of the bore, as are means 20, 22 for inserting the head and the closure bar into the bore and extract them from it. When the burner is not in use, the closure bar is inserted into the bore to avoid the latter and the burner nozzles being blocked by splashes of metal and molten slag. <IMAGE>
