The present invention relates to an articulation mechanism for a sofa bed or a chair in which an element forming a chair is articulated to an element forming a backrest. The mechanism according to the invention comprises an angle bracket 9 intended to support the backrest element, itself articulated by two levers 5 and 6 to a plate 1 intended to be fastened to a seat of the chair or of the sofa bed, which is linked to an angle bracket 10 intended to support the chair element, by means of two levers 11 and 12 forming scissors, so that, when the abovementioned angle brackets 9 and 10 are aligned, that is to say when the articulation mechanism corresponds to the "bed" position, the articulation points of the various levers on the said angle brackets 9 and 10 are located below the upper level of the padding elements of the sofa bed or of the chair. <IMAGE>
