In the shafts (1, 2) of a uniflow regenerative shaft furnace, fuel lances (3) are distributed over the shaft cross-section, to which lances (3) a mixture consisting of a carrier medium and a solid fuel is supplied via supply lines (4). The transition of the carrier line (4) into the fuel lance (3) takes place by means of a bend (10). The solid fuel introduced is combusted by supplying combustion air (8) into the shaft (1). The hot combustion gases flowing downwards are conducted into the shaft (2) to heat the raw materials which have been introduced there and conducted off upwards as waste gas (9). The fuel lances (3) are in the form of uninsulated and outwardly uncooled steel pipe. If the carrier medium:fuel ratio lies in the range of 0.2 - 0.8 m<3> of carrier medium, e.g. air, per kg of coal dust, disruption-free operation of the fuel lances (3) can be achieved without deposits or significant wear occurring. <IMAGE>
