To purify a gas stream from vaporous or gaseous impurities in a two- or multiple-layer sorption filter, in which the gas stream to be purified flows through the sorption material layers connected in the manner of a parallel connection and the charged sorption material layers, connected in the manner of a series connection, are regenerated by a heated gaseous desorption medium, to reduce the unavoidable residual loading, the gaseous desorption medium is conducted through a further sorption material layer which is only connected into the gas stream during the regeneration phase, consisting of desorption and cooling, of the sorption material.
