Stretchers generally comprise longitudinal bars on either side, a piece of fabric arranged between these bars and transverse beams which keep the bars at a distance from one another. Besides these, there are also portable chairs or invalid chairs. Before a rescue operation it is often impossible to decide whether it would be more expedient to use a flat stretcher or a portable chair because this depends on a variety of factors, for example on the type and severity of the injury of the individual to be rescued, on the terrain, on the length of the transportation route and the like. Therefore, in order to provide a stretcher which combines the advantages of a normal stretcher with those of a carrying chair, so that the individual to be transported can be conveyed, as desired, in a lying or sitting position, it is proposed that the bars be designed so as to be slideable into one another in the manner of a telescope approximately from their central region to the foot end of the stretcher, that an articulated linkage be provided on the telescopic bar parts in such a way that the linkage forms a carrier seat from the essentially flat stretcher with the part of the piece of fabric fastened thereon, when the telescopic bar parts are pushed into one another.
