The multi-position drive has applications in internal combustion engines, especially in four-stroke spark ignition engines with valve control, which are largely used in passenger vehicles. In the case of these four-stroke engines the aim is to minimise fuel consumption whilst maximising the power output. This demand would be met if the fuel-air mixture present in the cylinder were to remain there up to the completion of combustion. In the case of the present valve control with fixed control times this is not ensured since these control times are ideal only for a small engine speed range and otherwise the fuel-air mixture either escapes unused through the exhaust system or is forced back into the intake port. The multi-position drive solves this problem in that it rotates the inlet and the outlet camshaft in relation to the crankshaft, thereby adjusting the control times ideally to the speed of the engine. The rotation of the camshafts is performed by an electronically controlled stepping motor and a special torsion segment.
