As is known, a method of this kind presupposes the casting of the molten metal produced in a smelting furnace into ingots followed by an ingot rolling process, and correspondingly large strand lengths have to be processed. A changeover to narrowly delimited diameter gradations and small batch sizes in short time intervals is not possible with the large ingot volumes of the feedstock. In order to make available the feedstock for subsequent forming to semi-finished or end products in a more favourable way in terms of time, with narrowly delimited diameter gradation and with minimum stock holding for single, small, medium and large runs, it is proposed that, after being heated in a furnace, the feedstock, comprising cut-to-length relatively short, rollable charging workpieces (4) with a uniform round or polygonal initial cross-section, be rolled in one heat in a reducing mill (3) to the dimensions of a blank (8) only slightly smaller than the initial cross-section for further working (9) from the same heat with deformation of the core. <IMAGE>
