The noise reduction method involves using difference signals (S) obtained from an actual image and a preceding image held in a memory (FSTO), which are fed through a motion-adaptive (MDET) temporal filter (M). The filtered difference signals are combined with the stored image signals to obtain a noise-reduced output signal (O). The stored image signals are subjected to movement compensation (MCO) using the actual image signals before providing the difference signals and combining with the filtered difference signals. The movement compensation can be effected in image signal blocks. ADVANTAGE - Reduced noise reduction only in moving parts of image. Less complicated image detector required.
