MANUFACTURE OF FLUX FOR STEEL MANUFACTURE

PURPOSE:To manufacture the titled flux having significant dephosphorizing and desulfurizing effects by mixing CaO with CaCl2, CaF2 and a metallic oxide and heating the mixture to a temp. between the eutectic temp. of CaO-CaCl2-CaF2 and that of CaO-the metallic oxide. CONSTITUTION:A Ca compound convertible into CaO by calcination such as quick lime or limestone is mixed with CaCl2 or a compound contg. chlorine and convertible into CaCl2 by a reaction with CaO such as hydrochloric acid or iron chloride, CaF2 and a metallic oxide. The mixture is heated to a temp. between the eutectic temp. of CaO-CaCl2-CaF2 and that of CaO-the metallic oxide, preferably <=1,000 deg.C to manufacture a flux for steel manufacture. This flux has low hygroscopicity and acts as a dephosphorizing and desulfurizing agent for molten iron.
