The invention relates to the use of an anhydride functional resin with an anhydride functionality between 50 and 200 meq/g resin as a wood preserver. The resin can be the reaction product of an unsaturated anhydride with a fatty acid or an oil. The wood preserver is preferably the reaction product of maleic anhydride and soybean fatty acid.
