摘要 PURPOSE:To provide a rapid and uniform heating of a catalyst layer over its entire range by a method wherein a premixture gas of fuel gas and air is fed near the surface of the catalyst layer, the premixture gas is ignited and combustioned, thereby the catalyst layer is forcibly preheated. CONSTITUTION:When an energization switch for an automatic control device 15 is operated to perform energization, a premixuture gas of a relative high volume of fuel gas and air is forcedly supplied into the space S through a merging flow pipe 11 and a distributer 6, passes from the rear surface of a catalyst layer 4 to a front surface thereof and then the premixture gas is fed near an entire surface of the catalyst layer 4. An igniter 12 is automatically operated just after the energization operation is performed, then a spark is generated toward the surface of the catalyst layer 4, the premixture gas is ignited to start the combustion and finally an entire surface of the catalyst layer 4 is combustioned. When a certain period of time is elapsed after the combustion of the premixture gas is started, the catalyst layer 4 is preheated up to such an ignition temperature as the catalyst combustion is enabled, thereby a relative small volume of fuel gas which is suitable for a normal combustion is supplied and thus a normal catalyst combustion is carried out.
