chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: described is method of preparing 1-aryl-1-cyanocyclobutane of formula: wherein R1 is halogen, and R2 is hydrogen or halogen. Said method comprises reacting 1,3-dihydrogenpropane, compound of formula IV: R1 and R2 wherein are as defined above, with base-containing suspension in organic solvent. Organic solvent is organic solvent which is substantially free from dimethyl sulfoxide and capable of maintaining 1,3- dihalogenpropane and compound of formula IV in dissolved state at reaction temperature, and process is carried out in the presence phase-transfer catalyst at temperatures from 35 to 80 C and water is subsequently fed.
