PURPOSE:To provide a low cost and high capacity magnetic scale, constituted of such a mechanism that a magnetically hard magnetic metal wire material is embedded in a non-magnetic substrate and a part of the surface of the embedded magnetic metal wire material is held to a state protruded from the surface of the non- magnetic substrate. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic metal wire material as a recording medium pref. comprises an Fe-Co-Mn-C alloy or an alloy obtained by containing one of Si, V, MO, W, B, Cr, Be and Ti or two or more of them in said alloy. As a substrate for embedding the magnetic metal wire material, any non-magnetic material such as aluminum or its alloy, copper, brass or bakelite may be used. The magnetic metal wire material may be embedded in or fixed to the non-magnetic substrate in such a structure that the surface of the wire material is held to a state protruded from the surface of the non-magnetic substrate so as to contact a magnetic head with the magnetic metal wire material. Herein, numeral 1 shows the magnetic metal wire material, numeral 2 shows the non-magnetic substrate, numeral 3 shows the magnetic head and numeral 4 shows a fixing adhesive.
