PURPOSE:To obtain a novel crystalline polymer having high molecular weight and containing 2,5-thienylene group as the recurring unit, in high yield, by polymerizing an active organic Mg compound prepared by a specific method, in the presence of an Ni complex catalyst in an aromatic ether solvent. CONSTITUTION:A crystalline linear polymer containing the 2,5-thienylene group as the recurring unit is produced by (1) reacting 2,5-dihalogenothiophene with metallic Mg in an aliphatic ether solvent (e.g. diethyl ether) in an inert atmosphere to obtain essentially an active organic mono-Mg compound, (2) removing the solvent from the reaction system, and (3) polymerizing said organic mono-Mg compound in an aromatic ether solvent (e.g. anisole) in the presence of an Ni complex catalyst [e.g. dichloro(2,2'-bipyridine)Ni, etc.] in an inert atmosphere. USE:The polymer exhibits high electrical conductivity when doped with an electron acceptor such as I2, and is used as a semiconductor.
