PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound having excellent color and high quality, free from polymerized component, and useful as synthetic fiber, paint, adhesive, etc., by treating a (meth)acrylic acid ester with a decoloring agent while passing air or oxygen through the ester. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be prepared by adding a decoloring agent (e.g. activated carbon, active clay, magnesium oxide, etc.) to an acrylic acid ester or methacrylic acid ester under agitation passing air or oxygen through the ester, and carrying out the decoloring treatment at 30-70 deg.C for 0.5-10hr, preferably 1-6hr. The amount of air passed through the ester is 1- 20vol%/min, preferably 5-10vol%/min, and that of oxygen is 1/3-1/5 of the above level. The amount of the decoloring agent is 0.1-3wt% based on the starting substance.
