PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drying agent in which the lowering of the water absorbing power of the chloride of an alkaline earth metal such as calcium chloride is suppressed as compared with a conventional composite drying agent and which has superior water-holding capacity. SOLUTION: In the drying agent containing the chloride of an alkaline earth metal and a water absorbing resin, part or the whole of the water absorbing resin is a water absorbing resin containing a polyamino acid or its salt and this water absorbing resin is obtained by reacting a poly-acidic amino acid anhydride having at least one ethylenically unsaturated bond in its molecule with a sulfonic acid-containing ethylenically unsaturated compound and/or a sulfonate-containing ethylenically unsaturated compound.
