PURPOSE:To perform a layout display at a high speed by writing a fixed pattern to a layout pattern memory only when a character code exists after reading character codes successively out of a code memory and switching a character pattern memory with a layout pattern memory. CONSTITUTION:The character code train fed from outside is converted and edited at an editing control part 31 and fed to a code memory 32 consisting of an RAM by an amount equivalent to a page. A layout display control circuit 39 reads the memory 32 by the size of the document given from the part 31, the information on the layout display start position and the information given from a display control circuit 35 and then feeds the character code to a pattern memory 33. A blank code discriminating circuit 37 delivers ''1'' and ''0'' if the output of the memory 32 is equal to characters and blank respectively. Then the character codes supplied to a layout pattern memory 38 are switched and controlled 34 and delivered to the circuit 35 for display at a display part 36. Thus the character codes are displayed at the same display part at an optional position and in an optional size. This attains a high-speed layout display.
