PURPOSE:To prevent the increase in a memory amount of a storage means by storing respective result applying binary-coding processing and dither processing to a picture and reading selectively any of the results of storage by a means discriminating whether the picture is an intermediate tone picture or a binary picture. CONSTITUTION:A picture data signal 2 outputted from a reading section 1 is inputted to a binary-coding circuit 11, a dither circuit 12 and a separation circuit 3. After the signal 2 inputted to the circuit 11 is binary-coding-processed, the result is stored temporarily in the 1st buffer 13. The signal 2 inputted to the circuit 12 is processed for dither and then stored temporarily in the 2nd buffer 14. The signal 2 inputted to the circuit 3 is decided for each block whether it is the binary picture or the intermediate tone picture and its result is outputted as a ''1'' or a ''0'' signal. A data selector 15 is switched by this signal and any of a picture data signal 6 subject to binary-coding or dither processing is outputted selectively to a coding circuit 7 and a printer section 9. Thus, the storage capacity of the buffer 13, 14 is halved in comparison with a conventional circuit.
