PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous product forming a three-dimentional network between fibers preserving fiber length and substantially free from coagulate of a vapor phase carbon fiber, to provide a process for an easily operable process for production of composite material (porous product) of resins or the like using a small amount of the vapor phase carbon fiber expressing addition effect and to provide a process for production of the porous product with a small volume shrinking degree under heat treatment. SOLUTION: The porous product contains 10-90 mass% of the vapor phase carbon fiber with a fiber size of 1-1,000 nm forming the three dimentional network, an aspect ratio of 5-15,000, a BET specific surface area of 2-2,000 m<SP>2</SP>/g, a peak strength ratio (I<SB>1,360</SB>/I<SB>1,580</SB>) of 0.1-2.0 for Raman scattering spectra at 1,580 cm<SP>-1</SP>and 1,360 cm<SP>-1</SP>, a porosity (V/V<SB>0</SB>) of 0.50-0.99 and a specific surface area (based on BET method) of 5-100 m<SP>2</SP>/g.
