PURPOSE:To obtain the titled latex useful as a water-based paint, etc., preventing the formation of latex composed only of the shell monomer, by impregnating an organic solvent solution of a hydrophobic polymerization initiator in an aqueous dispersion of a water-insoluble polymeric compound, removing the organic solvent, and carrying out the seed-polymerization of a monomer in the mixture. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous dispersion of a water-insoluble polymeric compound forming a core is prepared by the emulsion polymerization of a water-insoluble monomer (e.g. styrene) in the presence of an emulsifier. Separately, a hydrophobic polymerization initiator (e.g. azobisisobutyronitrile) is dissolved in an organic solvent (e.g. acetone) miscible with the dispersion medium of the above aqueous dispersion, and the solution is added to and impregnated in the above dispersion. The objective latex can be obtained by adding a shell-forming monomer (e.g. butyl acrylate) to the mixture, and carrying out the seed-polymerization of the monomer under nitrogen gas stream.
