PURPOSE:An electrochromic material having clear multi-color display properties, stable repeating display characteristics, and high-speed response, containing a reaction product prepared by reacting a specific high polymer viologen derivative with a high polymer sulfonic acid. CONSTITUTION:The desired electrochromic material containing a reaction product obtained by reacting (A) a high polymer viologen derivative shown by the formula (X is anion such as Cl, Br, etc.; Y is 3-10; Z is degree of polymerization) with (B) a high polymer sulfonic acid (e.g., sodium polyethylenesulfonic acid, etc.) in an aqueous solution. Preferably the material is further blended with an inorganic filler such as tin oxide, indium oxide, etc.
