Method of coding MAC type television signals, i.e. broadcast with time-division multiplexing of the analogue chrominance and luminance components, this method being intended to enable these signals to be transmitted, without corruption of the encipherment, over a distribution network when transmission cannot be undertaken directly within the MAC standard, characterised in that, when the broadcast signal is enciphered, a coding is applied, termed sequential-PAL or sequential-NTSC, in which the components U and V are transmitted alternately over the odd and even lines, in synchronism with the MAC coding, by suppressed-carrier amplitude modulation of a sub-carrier of frequency equal to that used in the case of the conventional PAL standard or the conventional NTSC standard.
