PURPOSE:A guest.host type liquid crystal composition for color display element, having high solubility especially in liquid crystal, containing an azo dyestuff having a specific cinnamic ester group. CONSTITUTION:The desired liquid crystal composition containing usually 0.1- 10wt% one or more azo dyestuffs containing succinic ester group, shown by the formula I [R1 is (lower alkoxy-substituted lower) alkyl; R2 is alkoxy, morpholino, or dialkylamino; n is 1, or 2], or formula II (R3 is alkyl), or a formula having methyl group at ortho-position of the benzene ring of the formula I or formula II, etc.
